Dame Allan’s Schools’ Head Boy Arshan Chowdhury has secured a place at the University of Oxford to study Philosophy, Politics and Economics (PPE).
Arshan, an aspiring foreign affairs specialist, achieved A* A A grades in A Level philosophy, maths and economics, and will take up his place at St Peter’s College, Oxford, this autumn.
The 18-year-old, who joined Dame Allan’s on a bursary award after passing the entrance exam, described the award as ‘the single most important enabling factor’ in his journey through school, which he has embraced fully — leading societies, performing in concerts and excelling in public speaking.
“Without the bursary, attending Dame Allan’s simply wouldn’t have been possible for my family,” he said. “The school has given me invaluable opportunities across so many areas — from academic enrichment to sport, music and public speaking — and I’ve been encouraged at every stage to pursue the things I’m passionate about.”
Arshan co-led the Economics Society, contributed to a wide range of student-led societies including Politics, Philosophy and Feminist Societies, and played a key role on the Sixth Form Council. He also organised a charity concert to raise funds for the Red Cross’ Gaza crisis appeal and performed in numerous musical events.
As Head Boy, he represented Dame Allan’s at major events and open days, regularly speaking in church services and welcoming prospective pupils and families. He described the role as ‘an honour’ and said one of his proudest moments was co-writing and delivering the Leavers’ Dinner speech alongside Head Girl Issy Golding.
“There were many times when juggling everything felt difficult,” said Arshan. “But Dame Allan’s taught me that perseverance is worth it. Some of my favourite school memories came from the moments that pushed me — and taught me I could do more than I thought possible.”
Principal Will Scott said: “Arshan is a remarkable student whose success speaks not only to his own drive and talent, but also to the life-changing potential of our bursary programme. He has made the most of every opportunity and contributed so much to the life of the school. His story reflects exactly what Dame Allan’s stands for — ambition, inclusion and enabling young people to thrive.”
