Leave your legacy

Did you know Dame Allan’s Schools is a charity (registered number 1084965) and, as such, you could choose to leave a gift to us in your will?

Even 1% can be left to Dame Allan's in your Will so those closest to you inherit 99%. You can of course leave more if you want to.

A gift in your Will will contribute to transforming the lives of pupils who would otherwise not be able to attend Dame Allan’s.

Our mission

Since Eleanor Allan’s generous bequest founded Dame Allan’s Schools in 1705, Dame Allan’s has existed to provide a rich and inspiring experience of education to its pupils.

Generations of Allanians have benefited from financial support in one form or another - most recently through Direct Grant, assisted places, scholarships and bursaries - and we are committed to ensuring that future generations will continue to enjoy the opportunity to attend the Schools, regardless of financial means.

We are ambitious in our plans to grow philanthropy at Dame Allan’s, to support bursaries and other projects which will enrich the educational experience of our pupils.

Get in touch

We understand that your Will is a private matter, however, should you choose to inform us of your intention to leave Dame Allan’s a gift, we would love to keep you updated on our progress during your lifetime.

Legacy FAQs

We've put together a list of frequently asked questions for you to help you on your way to leaving a lasting legacy. We know that family and friends come first, so we’re incredibly grateful to everyone who feels able to leave a gift to us. Every legacy really does have the power to transform a life.

Q: How do I make a gift to Dame Allan’s in my Will?

A: The only information your Will writer needs is:

  • Our registered charity number: 1084965 and
  • Our Registered Charity name: Dame Allan’s Schools.
  • The type of gift you would like to make.

Q: Can I update my existing Will to include Dame Allan’s?

A: Yes - ask your solicitor about adding a ‘Letter of Wishes’ or a Codicil to your Will.

Q: Is there a reduction in inheritance tax on my estate if I leave a legacy to Dame Allan’s?

A: Yes, Dame Allan’s is a charity (registered charity number 1084965). Gifts to charities are entirely exempt from inheritance tax (IHT) regardless of the value of the gift. While the current UK rate of IHT is 40%, your estate will be charged a reduced IHT rate of 36% by leaving at least 10% of the taxable value of your estate to charity.

Q: Why should I consider leaving a % amount rather than a fixed sum?

A: A percentage ensures that your estate is distributed proportionately among your beneficiaries as you intended, as fixed sums and specific gifts are paid out from your estate first. A fixed sum may also feel appropriate at the time of writing, but not have the intended impact years later due to inflation or rising costs.
