“My time at Dame Allan’s helped me to pursue my dream of studying medicine.”
Before I came here, I was planning on attending my local state school. My Mum was a bit worried about that, as the class sizes were so big. One of things that I have really enjoyed at Dame Allan’s is the smaller class sizes, which have helped me to build great connections with my teachers.
Outside of the classroom, I’ve really enjoyed being part of drama clubs and productions. They have such an inclusive atmosphere, and have been a lot of fun.
I’m currently studying Biology, Chemistry and Spanish at A Level, and planning on studying Medicine at the University of Exeter. I’ve always been interested in science, but I knew I wanted a people-facing role rather than one in a lab.
Dame Allan’s has been so helpful and flexible when it comes to my ambition to study medicine, in particular Mrs Whitehouse, Head of Careers. I knew I needed to get work experience as part of my university application, so I found a suitable placement at St
Oswald’s Hospice, but the only time that I could volunteer was a Wednesday afternoon. The school was brilliant in amending my timetable to make sure I could attend my work experience, for which I am very grateful.
Without my bursary place at Dame Allan’s, I think achieving my dream of studying medicine would have been a lot harder to reach.
Meerab celebrated 3A*s at A level on Results Day and started at the University of Exeter to study Medicine in September.
“I’m hoping to study Chemistry, with the ultimate aim of going into the field of drug design. I’m really interested in how we can use science to help people.”
Being awarded a bursary to attend Dame Allan’s has allowed me to stretch myself academically, as well as meet friends for life. I was considered ‘clever’ in primary school, but
I think Dame Allan’s allowed me to discover my potential. Without the influence of my fellow students, and the conscientious environment here - I might not have pushed myself as I have.
My Mum was really happy when I was able to attend Dame Allan’s, as she thought it would offer me more opportunities. The school has such a supportive atmosphere; there is always someone to ask for help if you need it.
Chemistry is my favourite subject and I'm studying Maths, Chemistry and Biology at A Level. I’m hoping to study Chemistry at the University of Liverpool, with the ultimate aim of going into the field of drug design.
I’m really interested in how we can use science to help people.
Outside of lessons, I was lucky enough to take part in the choir, which I really enjoyed. I have built a great support network at Dame Allan’s and I hope these relationships will continue to support me in the future, just as much as they have through my time at school.
My younger brother has also been able to benefit from a bursary award at Dame Allan’s, so the bursary scheme really has helped to support our family in a big way. He’s really into languages at the minute, so it will be interesting to see what he ends up studying when he is older!
This 2023 leaver achieved AAA at A level and began her studies in Medicinal Chemistry with Pharmacology at the University of Liverpool in September.
